The Winnipeg arts community and stages across North America are mourning the loss of celebrated director and performer Rob Herriot, who passed away in Winnipeg on July 3. He was 60 years old.

Herriot was a towering and beloved figure, renowned for his dynamic work in both opera and musical theatre. A prolific collaborator, he was a creative pillar for local institutions like Manitoba Opera, the Little Opera Company of Winnipeg, and Rainbow Stage. His artistic influence extended far beyond Manitoba, with acclaimed directing credits for Opera Kelowna, Calgary Opera, Utah Opera, and Arizona Opera.

Beyond performance, Herriot was a passionate and dedicated educator. He committed himself to nurturing emerging talent, working extensively with artists at the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music and serving as a fixture at Edmonton’s prestigious NUOVA Vocal Arts summer program.

Herriot is remembered as a director of profound passion and clear vision. His most recent triumph was a vintage Canadian-style production of Mozart’s *Cosi fan tutte* for Manitoba Opera in 2023, which later toured to Vancouver and Edmonton, delighting critics and audiences alike.

He leaves behind his husband, Lars Treloar. Rob Herriot’s legacy is one of artistic excellence, generous mentorship, and an indelible contribution to the cultural fabric of Canada. He will be deeply missed.
